The cleverness of people with worldly concerns often puts to shame those who claim to believe in the life to come. The creativity and sense of urgency that characterize most business people often contrast sharply with the dullness and complacency of the so-called “religious people.” This is a sad reality, which was already an “established tradition” in the time of Jesus. To counteract this negative trend, Jesus told the parable in today’s Gospel passage. We are therefore challenged today to work hard to solve the many problems that beset mankind. We are challenged to get actively involved in creating a better society by working honestly, promoting justice, and using creatively all the opportunities of this life. From every indication, the majority of those who concentrate only on earthly values (those we call the “unbelievers”) are cleverer and more enterprising than those who profess to believe in God and in the after-life. The only plausible explanation for such a “contrast” is that many of the so-called “children of the light” (the believers) have failed to appreciate the relationship existing between this world and the world to come. They have failed to understand that the Kingdom of God is in the making already now and that all Christian believers are the laborers sent by God to work in it and make it grow as fast as possible and as best as can be. In this Eucharist, let us ask for the grace to be able to build God’s kingdom on earth with creativity and a sense of urgency.
